Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the passing of a much loved and respected Araceli Magalona, she joined as a registered nurse at the Milton District Hospital Medical/Surgical unit in March 2003. Before her family migrated to Canada in 2001, she worked as a volunteer nurse at Philippine Refugee Processing Center from 1990-1994 and as a registered nurse from 1994-2001 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Sally was a tireless worker and consummate professional who personified our values of compassion accountability and respect she will be fondly remembered for her excellent nursing skills dedication to her patients and selfless support of her colleagues. Over the past fall and winter Sally underwent active treatment at both MDH and Juravinski hospital in Hamilton. This spring, Cely elected to spend the final chapter of her life at home cared for by her loving family and community supports including her dear physician colleagues through the Milton community palliative care group. She leaves behind her cherished husband Justino and three children, son Justin and daughters Julianne and Jamille. Araceli is 53 years old, born 10th of July 1966 and passed away peacefully on the 3rd of May, 2020. Sally as she is fondly known, will be sadly missed.

I’ll never forget the day when my mom, also a MDH RN, was admitted to the hospital with a severe injury. Sally helped transfer my mom into her bed, and made sure that she was comfortable. She took me on a tour of the ward to show me where things were. It was only later that evening that I found out that at the time Sally was a patient awaiting treatment and many weeks later that I heard about her prognosis. From what I have heard about Sally, this was just one small example of what a wonderful human being she was. For someone to be taking such good care of another person while facing a much more challenging battle is exemplary. Our community has lost an angel. Sincere condolences to her family. Lynn Shire

Dear Magalona Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Sally’s passing. I worked with Sally from the time she started at MDH until I retired in 2011. She was always a delight to work with, dedicated and professional . She spoke lovingly of her family. She will truly be missed.
You are in my thoughts and prayers,
Marg Colgan

Sally was such a big part of our community in Milton especially at Milton District Hospital.
In her many little ways of helping and welcoming people she has made a big impact. She is so reliable and honourable. She cared for her patients who were strangers to her like they were her family. Treating everyone with dignity. Helping new nurses until they are able to cope and helping the older nurses cope. It was comforting working with her because you know whatever happened on our shift she would be there to help you with the challenge. She always had a calmness about her. Her faith in God had a lot to do with it.
For all of her acts of kindness she will be missed.
When we moved to Milton 10 years ago my daughters new friends was her son. She kept telling me how nice Tita Sally was how she made her feel so welcomed in their home. Rest In Peace my friend we will always remember you and all the things you did. When things get crazy busy on the nursing unit we will look for inspiration and ask “What would Sally do?”
