Bernie passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Sunday May 26th, 2019 after battling throat and neck cancer.
He is predeceased by his mother, Etel Sandor and his sister Clara Sarkozi. He is survived by his son Spencer.
Bernie was born in Budapest, Hungary. He and his family came to Canada as refugees during the Hungarian Revolution. They settled in Toronto where his mother became a well-known Hungarian chef and his sister a successful model and actress. Bernie’s path took the musical route. He started his career as a drummer in the late 1970’s and transitioned to a sound technician by the late 1980’s. For the next 30 years he was a staple in the Canadian music and corporate scene. His background as a musician and his outstanding ability to hear all the right frequencies put him in high demand. He loved great music and great musicians. Bernie appreciated the incredible musicians he had the honor of working with over the years, making his job that much more rewarding. In later years his son, Spencer worked alongside him. Spencer brought Bernie the most joy and was his most treasured accomplishment.
In keeping with Bernie’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral. He will be cremated with part of his ashes laid to rest with his mother and sister, in the family plot at Prospect Cemetery in Toronto and part shall be scattered at a lake up north.
There is a benefit that has been long planned taking place Sunday June 9th which will now include a celebration of life element.
A more casual celebration of life will be planned in the coming weeks.
