Obituary

February 20, 1939 – December 27, 2019. We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend. Norma always had a smile on her face, loved helping animals and was a wonder with plants and flowers. Any garden she touched bloomed into beauty. She loved people. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and bring a smile to your face. Animals of any kind were drawn to Norma; she was an animal whisperer. When it came to getting things done, she was a force of nature… she moved so quickly.
Norma was born and raised in Italy. She arrived in Canada on November 1961, a year after meeting Raffaele Viler, who she married on December 2, 1961. Although she was unfamiliar with the English language when she arrived in Canada, she applied herself to learning via night school, reading copiously and befriending our English-speaking neighbours while raising a young family. Norma had a strong faith with a special love of the Blessed Virgin Mary and believed in the healing power of prayer. She worked as a short order cook in the 80s and was an integral part of the family landscaping business. Much of her time in her later years was devoted to helping the Upper Credit Humane Society in Erin. She volunteered her time to the cats and planted and maintained a flower bed at the shelter. Every spring, she donated beautiful potted plants to the Upper Credit Humane Society Thrift Store plant sale in support of the shelter. Living in the country, she rescued many cats, many of which became her loving pets who sorely miss her.
On November 24, 2019, Norma received a diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer. She was grateful to her primary nurses and cleaning staff at Milton District Hospital during her short stay. Of the palliative care team who cared for her while at home, she was particularly fond of Nurse Dianna and Dr. Zeni. She shared her faith and love of the Blessed Virgin Mary with her care team. Norma and her family are so blessed and thankful for the kind acts of food, gifts, comfort and prayers from the many friends of the family who were aware of the illness.
Norma is survived by her loving husband and children Raffaele, Loris and Rosanna, her beloved cats, her family in Italy: brother Duilio, Sister-in-law Clelia (Piero), nieces and nephews, Elvino, Daniella, Fabio, Marina; cousins Norma and Graziella in Australia. She is predeceased by her loving parents, Vittorio and Veronica Fermo, sister-in-law Iolanda Fermo , beloved cousin Natalia and many aunts and uncles.
Norma passed peacefully at home surrounded by her adoring family and will be missed by all whose lives she touched. We will keep her close to our hearts. Family and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 10:00 am to 10:45 am followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church 139 Martin St. Milton. Memorial donations to the Upper Credit Humane Society would be appreciated.

Another angel in heaven... Norma was a sweetheart.
She always had a smile and a hug for me, when she came to the shelter. Norma shared her gardening passion at the Upper Credit Humane Society when time allowed her.
I am truly sorry for your loss, she as very special to me,
Respectfully, Angela Pellegrino, Volunteer at the shelter
